When the Dallas 2012 bid committee submitted its revised bid Friday, it was expanded by 386 miles and introduced a residential venue near Deep Ellum.
On the advice of U.S. Sailing officials, the sailing venue at Lake Ray Hubbard was scratched in favour of Corpus Christi.
Dallas Bid head David Biegler said the other adjustment to the 600-page, 19-chapter bid was the addition of an auxiliary Olympic Village near Exposition Plaza and downtown’s Deep Ellum neighbourhood.
Biegler said the main Olympic Village proposal remains unchanged from the southern Dallas County site submitted in December. The IOC prefers the Olympic Village to be close to the Olympic Stadium and hub of the events. Dallas 2012 focused its bid around the 277-acre Fair Park. A new stadium, cose to the site of the existing Cottom Bowl, is part of the bid.
Dallas’ bid proposes to use private money, with projected revenues of about $2.7 billion on expenditures of about $2.5 billion. If a budgeted surplus remains untouched, the bid group could come out ahead by as much as $357 million.
The proposed dates for a Dallas 2012 Olympics are June 8-24 when the average daily temperature is between 70 and 90 degrees.
Gymnastics and basketball would be at Texas Stadium, with boxing at the new American Airlines Center. Beach volleyball would be held at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie.
The USOC instructed bid committees to name existing veneus, with the understanding that a team such as the Dallas cowboys might be in a new stadium by 2012.
Biegler said USOC officials last month informed Dallas 2012 and the seven other American bid cities that the documents submitted by the June 1 deadline for corrected versions can’t be changed until one of the cities wins the nomination. The USOC will select its candidate in October 2002.
Biegler also said the USOC asked bid groups not to make their documents public until last Friday, which he said helped explain why some interested parties did not get word of the sailing venue change.
