CTV Wants To Acquire Canadian Olympic Broadcast Rights

Private television broadcaster CTV is attempting to acquire the Canadian television rights to three Olympics, beginning with the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The Globe and Mail reports that sources say the network is expected to present an offer to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the 2012 Summer Games and 2014 Winter Games.

Canadian television rights for the three Olympic Games would be about $200 million (Can.) – $80 million for Vancouver, $55 million for the 2012 Games and $65 million for the 2014 Winter Olympics, reports the newspaper.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has aired several Olympic Games and probably has the inside track for rights to the Vancouver 2010 Games. Ratings in Canada for those Games will be huge and the promotional opportunities extensive, according to the Globe and Mail.

But the public broadcaster could be challenged by CTV as well as Rogers Communications, the media giant involved in cable and Internet distribution.
