Construction On PyeongChang 2014 Facilities On Track

PyeongChang officials report that construction of a main stadium for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and other major sports facilities in the city is on schedule.

Thirteen Olympic venues will be “prepared” around the city – seven will be constructed while the other six, including an Alpine Skiing venue, already exist and will be adapted to meet international standards.

Construction on the Ski Jumping, Cross Country and Biathlon facilities have been planned and an all-inclusive Alpensia Resort Project in Gangwon Province is underway.

The resort will house Olympic-related competition facilities, a golf course, water park, and high-quality accommodation.

Meanwhile according to a preliminary poll carried out from November 23 to 25 by Korea Research held prior to an official national awareness survey of the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games to be conducted from December 20 to 23 among residents of Gangwon Province where PyeongChang is located, showed there is strong support among Koreans – 92.3 per cent nationally, 96.9 per cent of Gangwon residents and 97.3 per cent of PyeongChang residents.

The most cited reason (52.7 per cent) for winning the bid was to upgrade Korea’s image, followed by encouraging balanced local development and stimulating the regional economy (29.6 per cent) and promoting winter sports (10.1 per cent).

Based on the poll the PyeongChang bid committee says it plans to carry out varied promotional activities aimed at encouraging public participation and improving awareness.
