Companies Urged To Fly Glasgow 2014 Banners

Derek Casey who is spearheading Glasgow’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games told delegates from the local construction industry that he wants more office windows across the city displaying giant “Backing the Bid” banners, and fleets of commercial vehicles with promotional stickers.

He said more than 1.2 million people from housewives to office workers to pensioners to business leaders had registered their names in support of the bid.

Glasgow’s 2014 bid got a boost earlier this week when a developer put the huge banner, measuring 47 m by 14 m, on display at the site where Scotland’s tallest building will be built.

Ken Ross, chairman and chief executive of Elphinstone, is believed to have spent more than 20,000 pounds on the banner, reports the Glasgow Evening Times. He said, “as a Scottish group of companies based in Glasgow, we are proud to show our support for the city and for the nation by backing Glasgow’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games”.

Meanwhile delegations from Glasgow’s competitors – Halifax Canada and Abuja Nigeria – are in Glasgow this week for a Commonwealth Sports Development Conference.
