Commonwealth Games To Have Lasting Benefits – Halifax 2014 Official

Scott Logan, CEO of Halifax 2014’s bid for the Commonwealth Games, told a gathering of Games supporters that “this city, this province, this country…will continue to benefit from the Games long into the future”.

He said a successful bid involves more than the 12-day event that may be held in Halifax. A successful bid would provide facilities that will be used for years.

“This isn’t just a major sporting event”, he said. “…It is about the 40 and 50 years afterwards. It is an investment in the future”.

The Chronicle Herald reports Logan as saying facilities from the 2014 Commonwealth Games would be used by Nova Scotians and visitors to the province for many generations to come. “The long-term social benefits are absolutely huge”.

Logan said details of the bid, including various construction costs associated with the Games, will be reviewed by all three levels of government prior to the May 9 deadline for final submissions. He said the bid committee will eventually begin to share more information with the public. “When we do go public we will have information that is well-developed”, said Logan, adding that some details could be released as early as February.

According to the Chronicle Herald the bid committee was given a $175,000 cheque Thursday from the Nova Scotia Gaming Corp. to support the estimated $14-million price tag to bring the Games to Halifax.
