COA Candidates Say No

Two high-profile candidates considered for the position of CEO of the Canadian Olympic Association, following the untimely death of Carol Anne Leatheren, have declined.

Nancy Lee, CBC head of sports, confirmed she had turned down the COA’s offer and would stay on with the CBC.

And Canadian Olympian Alex Baumann, who once coveted the CEO position and applied for it, said the COA could forget his application.

Lee said in an interview that she could not come to terms with the COA. “I very much appreciated being asked and considered for the position. It was a huge honour. I talked to (COA president) Mike Chambers a lot. But at end of the day it came down to what I was looking for and what he was looking for weren’t the same thing and we couldn’t come to an agreement”.

Baumann said in an e-mail message, “I am no longer interested in the COA position. Somehow I do not think that they would be interested in me after the article I wrote comparing the Canadian and Australian systems.

When I applied in March, I thought that the position would have been good to initiate change, something desperately needed in Canada. Now I am not sure that change is possible within the existing bureaucracy”.
