The China Daily reports that the Chinese government will invest more than $153 million (Can.) over the next few years to speed up development of electric vehicles in an attempt to improve the auto industry’s profitability and ease the country’s demand for oil.
Li Jian, director of China’s department of high-tech development, said that commercialization of fuel powered vehicles is being targeted by 2005 and electric vehicles will be used in special transport services for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Air pollution is a serious problem in China’s major cities, with car emissions being a major contributor.
