Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday he has urged developers of Olympic construction to promote energy efficiency and environmental protection in their construction of venues for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games, while inspecting the national stadium, the swimming stadium, and the hockey stadium, all under construction.
Wen said, “China will not show extravagance in organizing the Olympic Games. We should save every drop of water and every kilowatt-hour of electricity in the construction of the Olympic facilities”.
He added that saving energy and environmental protection should be implemented in every project and urged developers to ensure the quality and safety of Olympic projects to strengthen management and be thrifty in construction, and take into consideration the future use of the facilities after the Games end.
China has guaranteed perfect weather for the 2008 Games and now state media revealed Tuesday that China will fire rockets into the sky to scatter any rain clouds ahead of the Games to ensure perfect weather.
Zhen Guoguang, head of the China Meteorological Association, announced the decision to use rockets on Monday, reports the China Daily. He said, “as summer is a rainy season this practice will become the focus of the meteorological services for the Games which will be held in the same season next year”.
