Canada’s health minister and Vancouver 2010 organizers are discussing plans to make the battle against childhood obesity an unofficial event at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
Federal Health Minister Tony Clement told a Vancouver website Wednesday that he has spoken with Games organizers and high-profile Olympians in a bid to put children’s fitness on the podium with a major public awareness campaign.
A new report by Canada’s House of Commons health committee says childhood obesity has become a national epidemic and that one in four Canadian children are considered overweight or obese, according to Statistics Canada figures.
The initiative is still in the discussion stage.
