Change In Government Could Boost Tromsoe 2018 Bid

Managing director of the Tromsoe 2018 bid committee Erlend Rian, who is a former mayor of Tromsoe, says a change in the government of Norway will boost Tromsoe’s chances of becoming a candidate for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The present government and the majority of Parliament did not want to grant the state financial guarantee needed for Tromsoe to bid on the 2014 Games. But at the parliamentary election in September it was mainly the winning parties that were in favour of a 2014 Olympic bid.

The Labour party and the Centre party, together with The Socialist Left party, are now in governmental talks and it is expected that a new government will be in power in mid October, increasing the probability of Tromsoe becoming a candidate for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, says Rian.
