According to the Associated Press, CBS is weighing a bid in conjunction with Time Warner for the rights to air the 2014 and 2016 Olympics. If the two come to terms there could be Olympic coverage on CBS and Time Warner’s cable networks, including TBS, TNT and possibly CNN.
Shirley Powell, a Turner Networks spokeswoman, told the media, “certainly the Olympics are a very strong sports property and something that we would have potential interest if it made economic sense for our company”.
Richard Carrion, the International Olympic Committee member in charge of U.S. rights negotiations, said he’s had informal discussions with NBC, Fox and ESPN/ABC.
Last week Carrion and IOC President Jacques Rogge said that economic conditions made it unlikely formal negotiations with the U.S. networks would begin before the Oct. 2 vote for a 2016 host city. Rogge said at the time “we are not in a hurry”.
