The Commonwealth Games Federation said Friday that with Halifax out of the race for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Canada has lost its chance.
According to CBC News Mike Hooper, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said it’s too late for other Canadian cities to replace Halifax despite the fact that Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger said Thursday he hoped to convince officials to consider Hamilton, which he said was ready and willing to host the Games.
Hooper added he doesn’t believe Halifax’s pullout will hurt Canada’s chances in the long run to host other international sporting events.
Meanwhile Halifax 2014 officials say there are no plans to release details of the bid. A spokeswoman for the bid committee says the organization’s board of directors would need to decide whether to release a detailed breakdown of the bid, and that hasn’t been discussed, reports CP.
The province of Nova Scotia has said it also isn’t prepared to release the analysis of the bid for at least a few weeks, even though there are no competitive reasons for keeping the details quiet.
But Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly says the city wants the bid details released and is urging the bid committee to make the information public.
