An opposition party in Wales is putting pressure this week on the Welsh government to begin preparing for a 2018 Commonwealth Games bid.
The Plaid Cymru party is reportedly using an opposition-led debate to push for a Cardiff 2018 Commonwealth Games bid.
Shadow Culture Minister Owen John Thomas said it was not acceptable for the Labour party to say Wales did not have the facilities for a Commonwealth bid when it had time to plan.
Culture and Sports Minister Alun Pugh earlier this year ruled out any future Games bid. A Welsh publication said, with Glasgow a favourite to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, it would be unlikely another British city could host the following Games.
But Thomas said, “I don’t underestimate the challenge that we would face in Wales to successfully bid for the Games, but believe that we are capable of achieving this aim.
“It’s no longer acceptable for the Assembly Government to make statements like, ‘we’ll never do it’, or ‘we don’t have the facilities’.”
