Buses To Feed People At Beijing 2008 Games

About 40 buses equipped with freezing and heating devices, and a capacity to carry food for 2,000 people, will be running in Olympic venues during the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Each vehicle costs about $200,000, said Chen Liqun, a manager of the Olympic food service provider.

Food will be stored in 15 freezers on each bus and can be transferred through an 8.5-meter-long microwave tunnel to heat the dishes from under seven degrees Celsius to over 70 degrees Celsius.

Each bus is equipped with seven operators.

Meanwhile a system to monitor food safety will go into effect during test events next month, said a government watchdog Thursday.

The Associated Press reports confidence in the safety of Chinese exports has severely waned internationally as the list of products found tainted with dangerous levels of toxins and chemicals grows longer each day.

This week officials vowed the Beijing Games will be part of the crackdown on unsafe food. The new food quality monitoring system announced Thursday will begin August 8 at the start of a series of 11 trials for Olympic organizers to assess their transportation systems, technology and logistics.
