A large building wrap has been unveiled on the Molson Brewery building in Vancouver during a ceremony to publicize Vancouver’s 2010 Olympic Winter bid.
The building wrap hangs like a curtain over most of the building’s one wall and is an action photo of Canadian snowboarder Patryck Bernier, a non-Olympic athlete. There’s also a view of a Whistler mountain and the sails on Canada place, one of the buildings along Vancouver’s harbour front on the building wrap.
There will be other building wraps revealed in the coming months.
Vancouver 2010 said that Vancouver is the first city bidding to host an Olympic Games to use the banners.
Following Berne’s withdrawal from the 2010 Games because a referendum showed Berne’s bid lacked support from its citizens, there were some calls by Vancouver poverty activists for a Vancouver referendum. Ted Nebbeling, B.C.’s provincial government minister responsible for the bid, said those calls were more “politically driven than any objective to be achieved”.
Nebbeling referred to a recent Ipsos-Reid poll which showed 81 per cent of Canadians and 67 per cent of B.C. residents support Vancouver’s bid. He said, “a referendum is a one-shot deal. We, on a regular basis, do polling. This polling shows constant support throughout B.C. and Vancouver and in Whistler. That is the very best way of getting a good grip of what people in this province think about the Games”.
