British MPs Want Shared Olympics

Five British MPs signed a parliamentary motion saying that London must not be allowed to host the Olympic Games alone.

They said that the benefits of hosting the Olympics should be shared across the country. They want events to take place in stadia across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland if Britain hosts the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

The MPs said they welcomed the prospect of the Games coming to the UK and that London should be the focus of such a bid, as the capital city. But they urge promoters to distribute a range of sports around the country.

A decision from the British cabinet on whether London will bid for the 2012 Summer Games could come later this week, although a published report said that it might be delayed for a week because the cabinet meeting Thursday could be devoted exclusively to Iraq.

Culture Minister Tessa Jowell said if London is to mount a successful bid, she wants to ensure that a bidding team can be put in place as soon as possible so ground is not lost to the other cities bidding for the 2012 Games. The winner will be chosen by the International Olympic Committee at a meeting in Singapore in 2005.
