At the ONOC Conference in Brisbane, Premier Peter Beattie announced that the capital of Queensland will consider bidding for the 2020 or 2024 Olympic Games.
Brisbane last bid for the 1992 Games before Sydney won the right to host the Games in 2000.
Beattie said it would take four or five years to prepare a bid and that Brisbane would have to wait at least 20 years before they could expect to be able to host the Games.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman told ABC News in Australia that he has not discussed a bid with Beattie, but he would support the concept.
IOC president Jacques Rogge who was in town for the conference encouraged Brisbane to make another run at the Games. In turn, Beattie pushed for the inclusion of rugby as an Olympic sport starting in 2012.
The decision on rugby will be made at the next IOC session in Singapore on July 6.
