Bid Officials Skip IOC Meeting

You won’t find any 2008 Olympic bid officials in Dakar, where the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is holding a three-day executive board meeting.

The new rules state that bid cities can’t send representatives to IOC functions unless invited, but the IOC said it can’t stop people from hanging out in the lobby of a hotel. And the 2008 bid cities decided to stay home.

Still, Toronto’s Olympic bid committee had intended to send four bid team members to the meeting in Dakar, but changed its mind because of the death of IOC member and CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, Carol Anne Letheren. A memorial service is being held for her Wednesday afternoon in Toronto.

But, as Toronto Star reporter Jim Byers says, since there were no other 2008 bid members attending, a four-person team from Toronto “would’ve been pushing it”.
