Bicycles To Make Comeback For 2008 Beijing Games

In a bid for clean polluted air prior to the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, Beijing citizens will be encouraged to use bicycles as a form of transportation.

According to a Games environmental action plan “Beijing will adopt administrative measures to encourage people to ride bicycles”. Special bicycle routes will be built by 2008.

Mr. Wang Kai, director of the bureau’s department of comprehensive planning, said the move was aimed at fulfilling environmental protection commitments to the International Olympic Committee.

Beijing has 10 million bicycles and almost 1.8 million cars. According to estimates Beijing could have four million cars by 2010.
