Beijing Wants To Host “Green” Olympics

Beijing has joined with 20 environmental groups to stage a Green Olympics in 2008. And the groups have combined with the Beijing 2008 Olympics Games Bid Committee and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection in the “Act Plan for Green Olymics”.

According to the plan, Beijing will motivate all walks of life to make sure that during the July-August period in 2008, the environmental quality will be completely up to the standards for hosting the Games.

Lian Congjie, President of Friends of Nature, expressed his hope that the 2008 bid could help Beijing make great progress in addressing the beleaguering problems in environment.

According to the plan, by 2008 the city will reach the same standards of air quality as those in big Western cities in terms of the content of sulfur dioxide, nitric dioxide and carbon monoxide.

The city will also improve the quality of its water in rivers and lakes to national standards and meet national requirement on noise control by the year 2008.

Beijing will also motivate people from all walks of life to establish an interacting mechanism between government, its citizens and corporate circles to implement the measures.
