Beijing is tackling the city’s air pollution problem ahead of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Environmentalists from home and abroad are to study the emission and transfer of air pollutants in Northern China according to a program launched by the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau.
When the program ends in December 2007 there will be suggestions put forward on how to improve air quality in Beijing and how to decrease emissions of pollutants in neighbouring provinces, said Li Xin, an official from the bureau.
The program is focussing on seven points ranging from the utilization of remote sensing in air pollution monitoring and how secondary pollution forms in the region, to possible countermeasures to ensure air quality.
Li said, “the implementation of the program will reach an international level of air pollution study”.
Air pollutant data will be collected from about 20 monitoring stations. Advanced environmental monitoring technologies will be used in the program.
Three comprehensive observations across the region will be arranged between August 2006 and 2007 to monitor primary and secondary air pollutants, said researchers.
