Beijing has set up an ecological environment department dealing with environmental protection to make a “green” bid for the 2008 Summer Games.
The department has seven members who are experts and scholars in the field of ecological environment protection and has invited leaders of some of the non-governmental environment protection organizations as advisors.
Included in the department’s mandate is the drafting of a plan of pollution control for the Olympic Games and coordinating the implementation of the Action Plan for Green Olympics by relevant governmental organizations, enterprises, schools and non-government organizations.
But, according to Director Yu Xiaoxuan, the most important task of his department is to compose the environmental chapter of the Master Plan, which involves environmental, ecological and metrological issues.
Yu added that the department will also draft detailed programs for the implementation of the Action Plan for Green Olympics and attract more individuals and organizations to take part in the activities.
