Beijing Launches Airport Expansion Ahead Of 2008 Games

As part of Beijing’s preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games the city launched an airport expansion program Sunday, which will accommodate 60 million passengers and 1.8 million tons a year.

The airport now has two runways and two terminal buildings with a combined normal handling capacity of 35 million passengers. During the 2008 Games it’s predicated that the peak monthly passenger arrival at the airport will hit 5.56 million.

The expansion includes construction of a new runway, a new terminal building, a cargo zone and some auxiliary projects at a cost of $2.3 billion and will be completed by 2007.

An international consortium composed of Naco of the Netherlands and Foster of Britain won the bid to build the new terminal building.
