About 300,000 Beijing residents have been evicted from their homes so that venues for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games can be constructed, according to the Geneva-based Center on Housing Rights and Evictions.
WorldNetDaily.com reports that on Sunday Beijing’s Mayor Wang Qishan defended the mass relocation of people for the Games saying it was necessary if the capital was to realize its Olympic Dream.
Wang said the main problems were transportation and public hygiene and noted that the average man on the street would need to be re-educated not to walk around the city wearing only trousers.
He wants to create several new satellite towns on the outskirts of Beijing which will require the destruction of many older and run-down homes.
The relocation of residents affecting more than 350,000 households or about 1.1 million residents was necessary because many houses were run-down said Wang.
