Beijing Builds Forest Park For 2008 Games

Beijing is building a large forest park along the banks of the Chaobai River, venue for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games aquatic sports competitions, reports the Beijing Times.

The park, 38 km long covering an area of 55,000 mu with a cost of $68.7 million (U.S.), will be the largest in Beijing and should be completed by 2007. The Beijing Water authority told the newspaper that initial work on the project has begun with more than 800,000 trees already planted.

According to plans the park will be divided into wetland and ecological areas, and wild life and sports and recreational areas featuring water, a dam, bridge, lamp and tree “sceneries”. Facilities for tourists will be added.

During the 2008 Games Olympic rowing-canoeing/kayak competitions (flat water racing and slalom racing) will be held at Mapo Village of Shunyi District with water supplies from the Chaobai River.
