Beijing 2008 Water Cube “Topped Off”

The official Beijing 2008 Web site reports that the main structure of the National Aquatics Center, known as the Water Cube, was topped off Monday.

The swimming venue is located at the Olympic Green and has a seating capacity of 17,000, including 11,000 temporary seats.

During construction the project’s builders had a series of technical problems which have been resolved. They include a lack of steel resources, difficulty in processing structures, complexity in the structure’s space positioning and high standard of melding.

The installation work was completed 45 days ahead of schedule.

According to the Web site the project is under “membrane structure installation and electromechanical and fitment processes”.

The entire project, which was started December 24, 2003, should be completed in October 2007.
