Beijing 2008 Update

The China Star Support and Promotion Group (CSGO) for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics Games was established Tuesday, authorized by Beijing 2008. In the next two years CSGO will organize promotional activities and all CSGO members will fully support and devote themselves to the promotion of Beijing 2008 by participating in BOCOG activities. The CSGO song and music video “Olympic Beijing” was unveiled Tuesday. The members of the group include more than 100 celebrities from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, and from overseas.

The Chinese government said Tuesday that Beijing is unlikely to meet its target for “blue sky” days with acceptable air quality this year, amid efforts to clean up Beijing in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Beijing met its air quality target on only 11 days in April, the lowest monthly figure on record, reports Xinhua. “It is unlikely that the city will hit its target of 238 ‘blue sky’ days this year”, said the agency, calling the situation a “blue sky” crisis. It said the city would need at least 22 days with good air quality per month from June to December to meet its goal.

Beijing 2008 has announced it will be holding a World Broadcaster Meeting and the first World Press Briefing to be held in Beijing, in August and September. The two meetings will allow the world’s broadcasters and press to get first-hand information on Beijing 2008’s progress, and to learn about the services that will be offered to them during the 2008 Games. The World Broadcaster Meeting will take place August 9 to 11 where more than 300 delegates of radio and television rights-holding broadcasters from around the world will be briefed by the Beijing Olympic Broadcasting Co., Ltd., the host broadcaster for the Beijing Games, on productions plans, the International Broadcast Centre and services to broadcasters. There will also be presentations by BOCOG on transport, accommodation, technology, accreditation and marketing. The World Press Briefing will be held September 25 to 29 and is designed to allow international news organizations to review first hand Beijing 2008 preparations. Attendees will have a chance to learn about the facilities and services that will be available for the accredited media during the Games and will participate in venue tours, look at accommodation facilities and hear about the competition schedule, planned services and facilities for the media at the Main Press Centre and the venues. They will also be informed about accommodation, transportation, accreditation, rate cards, technology, and photo and news services.
