Beijing residents are being encouraged to help achieve Beijing 2008’s green goals and are being paid for their efforts.
Offences including polluting factories, dusty construction sites and vehicles emitting black smoke are being reported to officials with the city receiving 2,302 reports last year. Residents must deliver proof of their allegations through photos or videos.
Offenders responsible for 2,200 of the complaints have been punished and outstanding cases will be settled by the end of the month, said the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau.
The program was initiated in 2004 and will continue this year.
The English electronic map for Beijing 2008’s official website debuted Tuesday – the first Olympic Games official website to use electronic applications of a geographical information in multi-languages for the Olympic Games.
The map features special columns on four topics including Olympic competition venues, Olympic-licensed stores, subway stations, and traditional housing in Beijing – Hutongs.
One of the map’s highlights allows users to zoom in or out.
More information and functions will be integrated into the map and users will be able to receive competition information, a basic introduction of the venues and weather information.
Meanwhile more than 7,000 people have applied to volunteer for the 2008 Olympic Equestrian events. The Equestrian Company will select and notify 100 leader-volunteers by the first week of February who will be trained in March.
The company is recruiting 1,800 volunteers to help ensure the equestrian events run smoothly.
