Beijing 2008 – Tennis, Badminton

Hawk-eye technology is to be used at the Beijing 2008 Olympic tennis competition, reports Xinhuanet.

The Hawk-eye system is made up of eight to 10 high-speed cameras, a computer and a large screen that tracks data on the movement and landing of the tennis ball from multiple angles and converts that data into 3-D images displayed on the large screen.

The system is to be installed at the Olympic Green Tennis Center ahead of the Games. Beijing 2008 would be the first Olympic Games to use the technology.

Athletes competing in the Beijing 2008 tennis competition will be able to challenge calls by the chair umpire with backup from the hawk-eye cameras.

Meanwhile the Badminton World Federation (BWF) has approved the use of the Beijing University Technology gymnasium as the venue for the Olympics badminton competition. BWF deputy president Datuk Punch Gunalan said the venue was the best for badminton since the sport made its Olympic debut in Barcelona in 1992.

He said, “this is also the first time that the hosts are ready well before the Games. The trail run was a success. They need to make only some minor adjustments. We have asked the organizers to provide a bigger space for the media room. They will also be looking at the air-conditioning in the training hall. They have a very good impressive facilities for the Olympics”.
