Beijing 2008 Green Olympics Contest Kicks Off

Schoolchildren in Beijing have the opportunity to participate in a painting contest called “Green Dreams, Colorful Olympics” which was kicked off in Beijing Tuesday.

Some of the winning paintings will be used to beautify the construction sites of Olympic projects and decorate athletes’ rooms at the Olympic Village, according to organizers. Deadline for entries is early July.

The contest is organized by the Beijing Youth Palace and Beijing Environmental Protection Foundation and supervised by the Environmental Activity Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Games. The two-month campaign will feature environmental protection.

BOCOG executive vice president Jiang Xiaoyu said at the launch ceremony, “Green Olympics” is one of the three concepts of the Beijing Olympics (the others are High-tech Olympics and People’s Olympics) and BOCOG has paid great attention to publicity of environmental protection in its preparatory work for the 2008 Games.

Between May 8 and 23 organizations and individuals participating in the contest will have a chance to exchange their waste paper and books for recycled environment-friendly paper for their projects.
