Beckham Backs London Bid – Angers Madrid 2012

Real Madrid’s David Beckham angered Madrid 2012’s bid committee after he pulled out of a team photo to promote Madrid’s 2012 bid because he backs London’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Beckham is a team ambassador for London 2012.

According to the London-based Mirror, Beckham called his agent and was given permission to withdraw at the last moment, angering bid officials.

A spokesman for Madrid 2012 said, “we signed an agreement with Real Madrid which says that their players will promote our bid. Our agreement refers to all the players. If Real Madrid players are promoting the Olympics collectively we expect all to take part. We can’t just put some players to one side”.

Beckham’s spokesman says he has a deal with the club not to be featured in Madrid 2012 events. He said, “I have spoken to the club about this and they understand”.

Real Madrid shirts will soon feature the logo for the Madrid bid – which Beckham will have to wear, reports the Mirror.
