Alex Baumann, considered one of the leading contenders to be named the COA’s chief executive officer, following the death of Carol Anne Letheren in February, is not on the COA’s “very short, short list”.
Deborah Allan, COA director of communications, wouldn’t say why Baumann, who earned an endorsement from sprint great Donovan Bailey among other high-profile athletes, was not included on the list.
But a source within the COA said that Baumann had a lack of knowledge of the Canadian business establishment and the COA is looking for someone with leadership qualities and with experience as a sport executive.
Baumann has lived in Australia since 1991, and his knowledge of the private sector in Canada is limited.
Bailey also expressed interest in the job, but never formally followed it up.
