Athens 2004 Updates Sports Federations

At the ninth meeting between Athens 2004 and the National Sports Federations, Athens 2004 Executive Director Marton Simitsek detailed for the group the pre-Olympic test events and the Volunteerism sector.

Simitsek pointed out that the test events program has been “locked up” and settled, up to the very last one which has been scheduled for June 2004.

Athens 2004 has created 18 venue groups, each one having under its supervision an average of three venues where the test events will take place. The entire operational plan will have been completed by the end of the year.

There are now 18,912 official volunteer applications under the Olympic Volunteerism program. Of these 50.66 per cent have expressed an interest in sports.

A special service has been set up under the Volunteerism program in cooperation with Athens 2004 which will help in finding skilled people as volunteers.

Regarding sports venues, Athens 2004 Executive Director Yiannis Pyrgiotis said that at least 23 projects are presently underway, five have been completed and eight are in the stage of assessing offers being submitted.

He said “the progress achieved is significant and in the case of certain projects, such as the Main Press Centre and the International Broadcasting Centre, it has reached 61 per cent of completion”.
