There’s controversy regarding plans to build a Mosque in the Athens suburb of Palania so that Muslim athletes attending the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games and others will have a place to pray. But the Mayor of Palania is against constructing the Mosque because he said there are no Muslims living in the area.
The managing director of Athens 2004 has signed a contract with a firm to supply medical equipment to medical stations at 220 Games competition and non-competition venues. The equipment includes a defibrillator, a cardiograph, and an electronic stethoscope; and the company will train Athens 2004 medical staff in the use of the machines.
Greece’s labour ministry reports that 1,348 inspections conducted on 31 construction sites of Olympic venues over the past thee years have resulted in 509 penalties ranging from fines, legal action and project suspensions.
Eleven workers have lost their lives in the past three years working on construction sites.
