Following flash floods which affected hundreds of homes in low-lying areas on the banks of the Athens’ Kifissos River, Greece’s environment Minister Vasso Papandreou promised to step up a major drainage project to protect Athens from flooding during the 2004 Games.
Papandreou said the government will spend about $629,000 million (Can.) prior to the Games to boost the city’s drainage capacity. He said the money is part of an anti-flooding project that began in 1994.
“We are continuing the works in an intense rate. The main part of the program will be completed by the Olympics”, said Papandreou.
