Athens 2004 Spectators To Stay On Cruise Ships

According to organizers of the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games, seven cruise ships will be berthed in the port of Piraeus to be used as hotels during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, adding 6,000 first-class rooms for official visitors and spectators.

The ships were chosen by organizers through a tender and will dock next to another four, privately booked by sponsors, media and national Olympic committees.

In a statement ATHOC said, “they (the boats) have 6,640 rooms and can host up to 13,280 visitors”. About 5,000 people will be employed on the ships.

The luxury cruiseliner Queen Mary 11, the largest passenger ship ever built when it is completed next year, will be one of those floating hotels.

The Queen Mary 11 will have 173 suites and 1,137 cabins on 15 decks. Its cost is about $780 million.
