About 25,000 officers from the Greek Police, fire department, coast guard, armed forces and National Intelligence Service are expected to attend classes reviewing the increased security demands posed by the Olympics. The training program, part of a massive Olympic security effort, will cost more than $600 million.
Greek Police Chief Maj. Gen. Fotis Nasiakos said, “holding the Olympic Games in a totally safe environment is a challenge and a national goal. The responsibility we have toward the nation is a great one. We must succeed”.
Authorities will guard more than 17,000 athletes and guides, 8,000 members of the Olympic family, which includes sponsors and federation officials, 3,000 judges and 20,000 journalists.
