Athens 2004 Paralympic Update

International Paralympic Committee president Phil Craven said Friday the Greek government had assured him that the 2,500 year ruins on the Acropolis will be made accessible to people with disabilities in time for the Paralympics being held Sept. 17-28.

Craven was assured that an elevator and less-steep paths would be built at the ancient monument by the time the Games start two weeks after the Athens Olympics.

The Central Archaeological Council agreed to carry out a preliminary study to see if it was possible to build an elevator without damaging the Acropolis.

Organizers have also launched a campaign to get store owners and businesses to make their establishments accessible.

Athens organizers have also unveiled the Paralympics torch relay, which being Sept. 9 after the flame is lit under the Acropolis. The relay will last nine days and go through the greater Athens region, crossing 54 towns with 680 torchbearers covering 256 miles.
