Athens 2004 Olympic Village – From Sleek To Bleak

Athletes attending the Athens 2004 Olympic Games will be staying in an Olympic Village that is a contrast in moods.

Because of security measures at the village, there will be three separate wire fences and a moat around the 4.2 km perimeter.

But according to reports on the inside there are white marble floors and staircases, “chic” bedrooms, and airy balconies.

According to The Independent newspaper the facilities include 366 houses and 229 three three-to-five bedroomed maisonettes, 35 minutes’ drive from the main stadium.

Meanwhile coaches taking the athletes to the venues will be staffed with an armed security guard and escorted by armoured vehicles. Individual athletes will be accompanied by an armed guard even on shopping expeditions.

Also, the military’s summer resorts of Agios Andreas and Zouberi are undergoing renovations. They will host the 3,000 members of the extended Olympic family and the media during the Games.

The resorts are 95 per cent complete and will be equipped with new hotel amenities.
