When the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games take place there will be a major new design for the first time in 76 years on the medals awarded to the athletes
Organizers of the Athens 2004 Games wanted the medals to reflect ancient Greek tradition rather than images of rival Rome.
The new design, a Greek stadium and a new image of the victory goddess Nike, will replace the Roman amphitheater.
Since the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics the front side of the medals has featured a Roman stadium and a horse-drawn chariot with Nike holding a laurel wreath above her head.
Also, by tradition the reverse side of the medals has featured different designed created by each host city. For the 2004 Games the flip side of the medal will show the Athens logo, the Olympic flame and ancient Greek writing.
