Although the final cost of hosting the 2004 Summer Olympic Games won’t be known until the end of the month, the Greek government said Sunday that at a cost of more than $11.92 billion, the 2004 Games will be the most expensive Olympics of all time.
In an interview Greek Economics Minister Georges Alogoskouflis said, “the total will be greater than forecast”.
Alogoskouflis said the pain of paying for the costliest Games ever would be softened by the legacy the Games left in terms of tourism and new infrastructure.
It’s believed Greece spent close to $1.7 billion on security alone. It’s the first Summer Games since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the United States.
