A group called the Greek Society of the Friends for the Ancients is suing Athena and Phevos, the two official mascots of the 2004 Athens Summer Games.
According to the Seattle Times, the group says the cone-shaped caricatures, based on seventh-century terra cotta dolls, mock the gods Apollo and Athena.
Documents filed in the lawsuit say, “the two mascots…savagely insult our religion and identity. We want to see the gods as they are presented in statues, reliefs, etc., and not as parodies”.
The group wants the dolls banned and is asking $2.85 million for its suffering.
