Local Greenpeace director Nikos Haralamabidis said Wednesday that the Athens Olympics will have a “miserable” environmental record despite making pledges to integrate green policies into its bid for the Summer Games.
He said, “instead of moving forward even just a little bit, Athens has actually gone back, way back as far as their environmental record is concerned, it is pretty miserable. They had promised a lot of things in their bid in 1997 and have delivered almost nothing”.
He added that Athens would not get a single mark were it not for some improvement in public transport.
Haralambidis said apart from introducing a tram line and extending the metro, moves that will help decongest Athens and reduce pollution, organizers have failed in other respects.
