George Vassilakopoulos, president of the Greek Basketball Federation said that Greece was headed for a “national disgrace” because Athens 2004 Games Organizers have failed to make any progress since a major organizational shakeup last year.
It was the first time an athletics official with Vassilakopoulos’ seniority has criticized Athens’ preparations.
Vassilakopoulos said “we will not be able to avoid a national disgrace. In the eight months that have passed from the last threats of the IOC, nothing at all has been done…only words and pomp”.
Vassilakopoulos said the new 2004 organizers have done little besides signing an agreement with a host broadcaster last month. “We don’t know how or when the Olympic Village will be built, or the media villages. We won’t even have enough time for the Games”.
