Asbestos Threatens Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Village

The 2006 Commonwealth Games Village site has been threatened by the discovery of deadly asbestos which could further delay the project, reports the Herald Sun.

Games, health and union officials were to inspect what are believed to be asbestos-clad steam pipes found by workers at the Parkville site.

Earlier three kilometres of asbestos-clad water pipes were found in an audit and removed.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union health and safety officer Pat Preston said the immediate area had been isolated but work would continue in other areas while it was decided how best to remove the asbestos.

Opposition Major Projects spokesman Phil Honeywood said the find could lead to further delays and add costs to the $400 million project.

Honeywood added, “only last week the Government’s own documents revealed they are nearly a year behind schedule”.

The newspaper reports that documents released under Freedom of Information said work on the village should have started by last March at the latest.
