Because asbestos was detected in January at the site of the Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton track, Turin’s bid committee (TOROC) has approved a new location for the track. The new venue will be in Cesana Torinese, along the road that climbs to San Sicario in the vicinity of Pariol-Greniere.
Following on-site inspections, the Bobsleigh and Luge-Skeleton international federations approved the new site.
Also, TOROC has announced it is moving the Curling tournament to Pinerolo, because of a need to “remodel Ice Hockey organization during the Games and, at the same time to stage an entire tournament, from the preliminary phases to the finals, in Pinerolo”.
The International Olympic Committee has approved the change as did the FISG and the International Curling Federation. Franco Zumofen, FISG Vice President and Board Member for Curling said, “we surveyed the venue and declared ourselves in favour of moving the tournament to Pinerolo and using the existing structure, which will be appropriately modernized”.
The Ice Stadium will be modernized at a cost of more than $13 million (Can.) and a four 3,000-spectator stand will be added, making it a functional, modern facility which will host Ice Hockey events and other ice sports after the Games are over.
