Anti-English Hatred Could Affect Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Bid

The Evening Times reports that Scottish fans guilty of anti-English hatred during the World Cup have been warned they could seriously damage Glasgow’s reputation and jeopardize the city’s bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

City councillors are united in condemning what they describe as bigotry and hatred. In a council motion, Glasgow councillor Archie Graham said, “we are appalled at the anti-English hatred being expressed by some Scots during the current World Cup tournament. This hatred ranges from what is sometimes euphemistically termed as banter to vicious attacks on people for no other reason than their support for our neighbouring country in a football tournament.

“We call on all our citizens to join with us in calling for an end to the anti-English hatred that is so damaging to our city and country”.

According to the newspaper, Graham warned that if the city was perceived by the outside world as filled with petty-minded bigots, then top business conferences and events, including the Games bid, would be at risk.

He said, “we wouldn’t want to give that impression next year when it is decided which city will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014”.
