Another Possible 2016 Bid From Belgium

First it was Antwerp and now Brussels is thinking about bidding to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

According to a report in expatica.com, Brussels city council will submit its proposal to the Belgian Olympic Committee.

Its candidacy will be conditional upon financial aid from the federal, state, regions and linguistic communities.

Jacques Rogge, head of the International Olympic Committee has supported the idea, according to BBC Sport. He has praised Brussels facilities, including a 47,500 seat stadium, an airport, and a large hotel capacity.

Rogge has estimated the cost of hosting a modern Games at between $2 billion and $5 billion, but added that the economic benefits far outweighed the financial costs.

The Flemish government has already earmarked a quarter of a million euros for a feasibility study to be carried out prior to a possible bid, but according to an alderman from the Flemish green party Agalev, support from Flanders alone will not be sufficient for such a large project.
