Agreement Reached On Athens 2004 Media Villages

Athens Olympic organizers have reached an agreement with the municipality of Maroussi, the suburb where the Olympic sports complex is located, for the first of five villages expected to house about 11,000 media repesentatives, including 1,600 journalists, at the Athens Games.

The village will be built using municipal funds on 50 acres owned by the suburb. The final agreement is expected to be signed by Oct. 1.

Five media villages will be set up or built around Athens for the Games, with the largest housing 4,800 media members in a military resort and campground in a seaside resort east of Athens. Others will be located near the Olympic Village, the Olympic stadium and the new international airport.

All are supposed to be located within 30 minutes’ driving time of the main Olympic facilities and include restaurants, gyms, swimming pools and a medical unit.
