Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister and Chairman of the Afro-Asian Games organizing committee, told reporters the successful staging of the inaugural Afro-Asian Games could pave the way for India to host mega sporting events including the Commonwealth Games and Olympics.
India is competing against Hamilton Canada to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games and is also hopeful of winning the rights to host the 2014 Asian Games and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
The Afro-Asian Games begin in Hyderabad next week and 98 countries are expected to participate.
Naidu said organizers are taking all necessary steps to tighten security in the state. “There is no problem on security. Law and order here (in Hyderabad) is very good. Police will take all precautions and ensure nothing untoward happens during the Games”.
A Commonwealth Games delegation will be at the Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad to assess India’s potential to hold the event in 2010.
